Photo Equipment:
I took pictures using a
Canon EOS 20D digital SLR and a
Sigma APO 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX OS (Optical Stabilizer) lens. I also used a
Gitzo CF monopod which made it easy to shoot from the safari vehicles. The
Sigma lens developed some problems in Savuti, so for much of the remainder of the trip, I used a
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens, often with a
Sigma APO 1.4x
EX Tele Converter. This combination was about 2 pounds (1 Kg)
lighter than the Sigma OS lens, but the optics weren't quite as good.
The second-to-last day, I found a small jewelers screwdriver that allowed me
to tighten up the Sigma lens, though the maximum focal
length would not go past 351mm.
I downloaded pictures each day to an
Epson P-4000 Photo Viewer. This device saved our lives! I
shot over 7300 frames (about 20GB).
